Overview

The Bachelor of Literary Studies is a 90-credit program focused on reading, analyzing, and interpreting literary texts through both theoretical and creative approaches. Students study Quebec, French, and other francophone and world literatures, developing skills in literary theory, textual analysis, and academic research, alongside creative-writing workshops in prose and poetry. The curriculum combines core courses in literary history and methodology with elective seminars that allow students to specialize according to their interests. Full-time students typically complete the program in three years across six trimesters, though part-time study is also possible. Admission requires demonstrated French-language proficiency, verified through the Uniform French Examination, the Quebec ministry's written test, or UQAM's own test, unless the applicant holds an exemption. Passive reading knowledge of English is expected, and is specifically required for the course on questions of literary translation. The program is offered on UQAM's Montreal campus, with intakes each autumn and winter.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate French-language proficiency through the Uniform French Examination (required for DEC holders), the Quebec ministry's written French test, or UQAM's own French test; exemptions apply to holders of degrees from francophone universities or those who have passed another Quebec university's French test. Beyond the language requirement, candidates may be admitted by holding a DEC or equivalent; being at least 21 years old with relevant work experience; completing three university courses (9 credits) with a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.3 scale; or holding an appropriate diploma from outside Quebec after 13 years of schooling with a minimum average of 11/20.
