Program details

Overview

This 30-credit certificate trains students to teach French as a second language to learners at the preschool, elementary, and secondary levels, as well as in adult education. It is offered part-time, with courses held during the day or evening, and admission in the fall term only, allowing applicants to combine study with existing work or family commitments. The certificate does not qualify graduates for a teaching licence issued by Quebec's Ministry of Education and is intended as a complementary or preparatory credential rather than a path to public-school certification. Coursework covers second-language teaching methodology and applied pedagogical practice for a range of learner ages and instructional contexts. The program suits individuals already working with French-as-second-language learners in community, private, or adult-education settings, or those seeking foundational training in the field before pursuing further study.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission is possible through several routes: holding a DEC or equivalent; being at least 21 years old with relevant work experience; having completed at least three university courses (9 credits); or holding an appropriate diploma obtained outside Quebec after at least 13 years of schooling. All candidates must demonstrate written French competency, and must also show intermediate-level English competency or hold a DEC from an anglophone or francophone cegep. The program is offered part-time, with admission in the fall term only.
