This 30-credit certificate offers foundational training in religious studies, combining comparative religious history, religiology, and humanistic approaches to religion, offered at the Montreal campus on a full-time or part-time basis with fall and winter admission. Students take one mandatory methodology course (Methodology in Religious Sciences, 3 credits), four further mandatory courses chosen from paired options covering Christianity, world religions, religion and ethnicity, and the societal roles of religion (12 credits), and five elective courses (15 credits) split between two thematic lists, one on religious phenomena around the world and the other on the symbolic power of culture. Coursework includes analysis of key authors in the field and a broad panorama of major religious traditions, examining their values, beliefs, and practices from a scholarly rather than confessional standpoint. The program suits candidates seeking an academic grounding in religious studies for personal interest, cultural literacy, or preparation for further study in the humanities or social sciences.
