The Certificate in Painting is a 30-credit undergraduate certificate at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue focused on painting as a personal artistic practice. Students build technical command of traditional and new painting materials and processes while developing theoretical grounding in the history and analysis of painting. Coursework combines studio practice — Peinture I and II, Le tableau et le lieu, Procédés mixtes I and II, and a culminating Recherche en peinture project — with a course on issues in contemporary art. Students complete nine elective credits: one theory course (feminism and dialectics, material culture, contemporary aesthetics, or perception) and two practice courses (directed-creation ateliers, or courses on ruin, image rhetoric, light and space, or narrative and fiction). The programme opens toward hybrid painting practices and, classified under the Arts sector, can be combined with other UQAT certificates toward a bachelor's degree earned by cumulative certificates. It is offered at several UQAT centres and campuses, subject to a minimum enrolment per location.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is open on two bases. Under the collegial base, applicants must hold a Diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC) or the equivalent. Under the experience base, applicants must be at least 21 years old, have relevant knowledge and experience in the arts gained through work, coursework, or personal production, and demonstrate the capacity to undertake university studies; they may be asked to provide supporting documentation, a portfolio, or attend an interview. Applicants with relevant training exceeding these minimum requirements may also be admitted. Candidates admitted on the experience base whose experience is not judged sufficiently relevant may instead be admitted to the Libre premier cycle (9927) programme for select courses, maintaining a 2.5/4.3 average, before reapplying to the certificate.
