Overview
The Master of Science in Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta is a thesis-based graduate degree offered by the Department of Biological Sciences, which also offers a PhD in the same discipline. The program combines a supervised, independent research program with coursework, seminar participation, and a thesis defence, training students to identify and investigate new research problems in their field. The department maintains research laboratories and instructional facilities for 250 to 300 graduate students, covering digital image processing, electron and confocal microscopy, analytical chemistry, molecular biology, fermentation, biotechnology, and DNA synthesis and sequencing, along with an extensive greenhouse complex, holding tanks for aquatic animals, and controlled-environment rooms. Reference collections span microfungi, vascular and cryptogamic plants, and vertebrate and invertebrate specimens, including fish, fossil plants, insects, and parasites. Applicants are expected to correspond with prospective supervisors before applying and must secure guaranteed funding through scholarships, teaching assistantships, or external funding. The program is delivered on campus at the University of Alberta's Edmonton campus.
