Program details
Overview
Civil Engineering (CIVE) is a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) major at the University of Guelph focused on planning and building sustainable infrastructure using a systems-thinking approach, covering roads, water systems, smart cities, and climate-resilient communities. Coursework includes structural design, geotechnical systems, transportation planning, and sustainable water infrastructure, with specialized courses such as Civil Engineering Sustainability and Design and Water and Climate Justice; students may also pursue an optional Artificial Intelligence and Civil Engineering Systems emphasis. All students are admitted into the co-operative education stream by default, a five-year program including five work terms and more than 20 months of paid industry experience; students may request to move out of the co-op stream through their Program Counsellor, with the regular (non-co-op) route requiring at least one additional summer semester. The program is part of Guelph's School of Engineering and prepares graduates for infrastructure, environmental, and municipal engineering careers.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Civil Engineering (CIVE) Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) follows the University of Guelph's general Ontario Secondary School admission process: an applicant's admission average is calculated from the top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including any courses required for the program. Guelph does not publish fixed minimum cut-offs; year-to-year cut-offs are set by the quality and quantity of applications received and the space available in the program, and the university's own estimated ranges do not guarantee an offer of admission. All offers remain conditional on completing the OSSD (or equivalent), the required six courses, and achieving the minimum final average stated in the offer. For students seeking Guelph's co-operative education stream, which this program admits into by default, the university's stated minimum admission average to be considered is normally 80%, though actual cut-offs typically run higher.
