Overview

Ecology is a major within the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at the University of Guelph, focused on how organisms interact with one another and with their environment. The program combines foundational ecological principles with applied field training and introduces the economic, legal, and policy dimensions of environmental management. Students can tailor their coursework toward aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, policy, law, and management, or conservation. Learning takes place through greenhouses, aquatic facilities, the university's Arboretum, and field courses at locations such as Algonquin Provincial Park and the Bay of Fundy, alongside opportunities to engage with faculty research on topics such as pollinator decline and the effects of agriculture on aquatic systems. A co-operative education option is available as a five-year program. Graduates pursue careers in conservation, environmental management, policy, and related fields, or continue to graduate study in ecology and environmental science.
