Program details
Overview
Molecular Biology and Genetics is a Bachelor of Science major focused on DNA, the carrier of genetic information in nearly all living organisms. Coursework covers the genetics of animals, plants, and microorganisms, cell structure and function, gene regulation, developmental biology, inherited diseases, and applications of molecular genetics in biotechnology and medicine. Students may follow a general program or specialize in molecular biology, cell biology, developmental biology, or agricultural genetics, with a fourth-year research project allowing independent research under faculty supervision. The regular stream runs four years (eight academic semesters) and is lab-intensive throughout. A co-op option extends the program to five years with four paid work terms, providing up to 16 months of work experience. Graduates pursue careers such as clinical research scientist, cytogeneticist, laboratory technologist, genetic counsellor, research laboratory technician, physician, policy analyst, professor, and science communicator.
