Overview
The Major in Sustainable Agricultural Systems is offered within the Bachelor of Science (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences) at McGill's Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, based at Macdonald Campus. The program covers the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience needed to work in agriculture, including ecological stewardship, farming practices, and food security, and includes practical field experience and collaborative coursework. Course topics include economic systems of agriculture, precision agriculture, society and sustainability, crop science, and global food and development issues. Combined with the Specialization in Professional Agrology, the major satisfies the academic requirements for membership in the Ordre des agronomes du Québec (OAQ), the professional regulatory body for agrologists in Quebec. Graduates pursue careers as agrologists, landscape designers, and in crop solutions, biotechnology, and sustainable production roles.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Quebec CEGEP applicants need a DEC in Sciences de la nature (or the equivalent New Science or Arts & Science DEC stream) including Biology I, Chemistry I and II, Math I and II, and Physics I, II and III. Applicants presenting all prerequisites generally have an advantage in a competitive year, but McGill will still consider a minimum of three prerequisites — Math I plus any two of the science prerequisites — with any missing course added onto the McGill program after admission. Applicants completing the Sciences, lettres et arts DEC are eligible for every B.Sc.(Ag.Env.Sc.) program and are not disadvantaged in review for missing prerequisites, though the missing coursework must still be completed at McGill alongside the program's own requirements. For September 2026 entry, McGill sets a minimum overall R-Score of 25.0 and a minimum core R-Score of 25.0 in the math/science prerequisite courses; these thresholds are recalculated for each admission cycle and can rise or fall from year to year.
