Overview
Bioresource Engineering, offered by McGill's Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at Macdonald Campus, integrates biological science and engineering design to address demands for food, renewable energy, and bio-materials. The program is accredited by Engineers Canada as satisfying the academic requirements for registration as a professional engineer in Quebec and other Canadian and international licensing bodies. Students choose one of three emphasis streams: Bio-Environmental Engineering, Bio-Process Engineering, or Bio-Production Engineering, the last of which includes a Professional Agrology Option that can satisfy requirements for registration with the Order of Agrologists of Quebec. Coursework covers biothermodynamics, fluid mechanics, engineering design, and the responsibilities of the professional engineer. The program can be complemented with minors including Agribusiness Entrepreneurship, Biotechnology, Computer Science, and Environmental Engineering. Graduates work in the bioproducts and bioenergy industry, environmental consulting, agriculture and agri-food, water resource management, specialized machinery, and international development.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Quebec CEGEP applicants to Bioresource Engineering need Biology I, Chemistry I and II, Math I, II and III, and Physics I, II and III from a previous DEC (or the equivalent New Science or Arts & Science DEC courses) — one more math course than the general Agricultural and Environmental Sciences prerequisite list, reflecting the program's engineering content. Applicants presenting all prerequisites generally have an advantage, but a minimum of three prerequisites (Math I plus any two science prerequisites) is still considered, with any missing course added onto the program at McGill. Applicants completing the Sciences, lettres et arts DEC are eligible without being disadvantaged for missing prerequisites, though missing coursework is completed at McGill alongside the program. For September 2026 entry, McGill sets a minimum overall R-Score of 25.0 and a minimum core R-Score of 25.0 in the math/science prerequisite courses; these minimums are recalculated every admission cycle.
