Program details

Overview

Professional Agrology prepares students to advise farmers, governments, industry and the public on plants, soils, livestock, agricultural engineering and economics. It is the only McGill specialization that qualifies graduates to sit the admission exam of the Ordre des agronomes du Québec (OAQ), the body governing legal practice of agrology in Québec. The specialization must be combined with the Agro-Environmental Sciences major and a second specialization such as Animal Production, Ecological Agriculture or Plant Production, or with the Agricultural Economics major and the Agri-business specialization, within the Bachelor of Science (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences). Coursework includes Agricultural Legislation, Professional Practice in Agrology, and an Agrology Internship; students complete a paid professional internship during the final summer of their studies. The programme is offered within the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Graduates pursue careers such as farm advisor, agricultural account manager, crop consultant, livestock specialist, horticulturist and agricultural scientist, or continue to graduate study.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants apply to the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, offered on the Macdonald campus. Prerequisites are Grade 12 (or equivalent senior secondary) English or French matching the language of instruction, Grade 12 mathematics (precalculus or calculus), and two of Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry or Physics. McGill's requirements vary by educational background (Quebec CEGEP, Ontario, other Canadian provinces, U.S. or international curricula); presenting grades equal to or above published minimums does not guarantee admission, and applications are reviewed against the complete academic record. English proficiency (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90) is required unless the applicant is exempt.
