Overview
The Bachelor of Music is a four-year undergraduate degree offered through the Desautels Faculty of Music at the Fort Garry campus. All students begin with a two-year general foundation covering academic study, performance training, and ensemble participation, including individual lessons through Major Practical Study and involvement in ensembles each year. After the second year, students may continue in a flexible General Music stream or move into a concentration in Performance, Composition, History, or Music Education; the Music Education concentration further divides into Early/Middle Years, Choral, Instrumental, or Guitar/Strings sub-tracks. Instruction takes place on campus, with access to practice rooms and a range of student ensembles. Admission Requirements: Two entry routes. Direct Entry (current high school students or under 24 post-secondary credit hours): must meet the General Entrance and Specific Admissions Requirements listed in the Direct Entry Applicant Information Bulletin; the faculty admissions page does not itself state specific high-school courses or a minimum average for this route. Advanced Entry (24+ recognized post-secondary credit hours): requires a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0 or higher. All applicants, either route, must also complete a live audition (20-45 minutes, format set by performance area) and a music theory diagnostic exam, submit a 250-300 word personal essay on musical aspirations and plans, and provide two letters of recommendation from music teachers or instructors. Fall 2026 audition and theory-diagnostic dates run February 9-20, 2026. Meeting requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
