Overview
The Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) in History is a four-year, 126-credit-hour undergraduate degree offered by the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba. The programme combines core musicianship training with a concentration in music history. Students complete four years of Music Theory and Musicianship courses, Major Practical Study on their primary instrument or voice each year, and required ensemble participation. History-focused study includes an introductory course, Introduction to Music in History, plus two dedicated Music History electives spanning medieval, baroque, classical, romantic, and opera and popular-music topics. In the third and fourth years students take Research Methods and complete a Special Area Paper, building scholarly research and writing skills specific to musicology. The degree also requires two non-music electives to broaden students' general education. Graduates are prepared for further graduate study in musicology or careers requiring strong historical and analytical knowledge of music alongside performance training.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Bachelor of Music requires an audition in addition to meeting the University of Manitoba's standard Direct Entry or Advanced Entry academic requirements; "meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program." Each Desautels Faculty of Music performance/composition area may set its own specific audition requirements or recommendations. Direct Entry applications are accepted for Fall, Winter and Summer terms, with domestic deadlines of August 1 (Fall), December 1 (Winter) and April 1 (Summer), and international deadlines of May 1 (Fall), October 1 (Winter) and February 1 (Summer).
