MA/MS in Surgery

The Master of Science in Surgery, offered through the Department of Surgery in the Max Rady College of Medicine, is open to residents at the University of Manitoba who are enrolled in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada specialty training program. It allows a surgical resident to earn a research-based M.Sc. alongside clinical certification, typically incorporating a dedicated research year with reduced clinical duties. Students complete 12 credit hours of coursework at the 7000 level together with 12 months of supervised thesis research. Admission requires an approved research proposal, reviewed by the Department of Surgery's Graduate Chair before the Faculty of Graduate Studies grants final approval, along with an online application, application guide, and supplemental form. Because the program is restricted to residents already holding an M.D. and enrolled in postgraduate surgical training, it functions as a combined clinical-research credential rather than a stand-alone entry program. Full-time students can expect to complete the degree in two years.
