Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Environmental and Sustainability Studies emphasizes a social science and humanities perspective on environmental and sustainability challenges and opportunities. The program provides a strong philosophical, social and scientific basis for understanding the full diversity of environmental and sustainability issues, and positions students to be effective agents of social and environmental innovation, who can promote mitigation of, and/or adaptation to, environmental challenges. An understanding of the foundations of environmental citizenship is emphasized. The degree offers students substantial opportunity for experiential learning through a number of courses.

Admission Requirements: UNBC's own calendar page for this program lists its curriculum and structure but sets out no separate admission section; entry follows the university's general undergraduate standard. Direct entry from British Columbia secondary school requires an overall average of 65% across five Grade 12 courses: English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12, three approved academic Grade 12 subjects, and one further Grade 12 course (academic or elective, whichever grade is higher). UNBC publishes the full list of approved academic Grade 12 courses and separate rules for out-of-province, IB and AP applicants. Transfer applicants need at least 15 credit hours of transferable post-secondary coursework and a cumulative GPA equivalent to UNBC 2.00 (C, 63%) on the most recent 30 credit hours. International applicants' secondary and post-secondary credentials are assessed against the equivalent British Columbia standard on a country-by-country basis, or against the General Certificate of Education equivalent. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet UNBC's institution-wide English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no module below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 per section, Duolingo English Test 125 with no sub-score below 115, CAEL 70 with no subtest below 60, or PTE Academic 65 with no section below 60.

Start Date:UNBC's own page for this program lists three intakes a year - January, May and September - not the two entry points the general-entry deadline table covers. The September semester runs September to December, the January semester January to April and the May semester May to August; 2026 September classes begin 9 September 2026, 2027 January classes 7 January 2027 and 2027 May classes 10 May 2027.
Application Deadline:This is UNBC's institution-wide deadline rule for general-entry BA, BComm, BPl and BSc programs, not a date set by this program on its own. Domestic applicants: UNBC accepts applications continuously for these programs and publishes no closing date for either semester. International applicants: 11 July for September-semester entry and 8 November for January-semester entry - UNBC prints these two dates without a year on its undergraduate application deadlines page, and warns that applying after them risks not receiving the documentation needed to study in Canada before the semester begins. Applications for the 2027-2028 intake open in early October. UNBC's undergraduate application deadlines page publishes windows for the September and January semesters only, while this program's own page lists a May intake as well, so an applicant aiming at a May start should confirm the date with UNBC's Future Students team before applying.
