Overview
The Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Regina follows a Pre-Social Work foundation year and prepares students to work directly with individuals, families, and communities. The curriculum teaches students to analyze social policy and programs, design human service initiatives, engage in community-level advocacy, and conduct social work research, with course content grounded in anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and strengths-based approaches and attention to Indigenous and decolonizing perspectives. Upper-level courses are taught in small, discussion-based classes. A defining feature of the program is a supervised practicum placement, completed over two terms and typically undertaken in the final year, in which students gain direct social work experience in a community or agency setting. The program is delivered at the university's Regina campus, at its Saskatoon campus, and through regional colleges across Saskatchewan, and is the only Bachelor of Social Work in the province accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. It suits students aiming for careers supporting people through mental health, child welfare, healthcare, criminal justice, or education systems. Graduates become eligible to register with the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers and use the professional title of Social Worker.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Bachelor of Social Work requires completion of the one-year, 30-credit-hour Pre-Social Work program, followed by a separate, competitive BSW application. The BSW admission GPA must be at least 70 per cent, calculated from the applicant's most recent 30 credit hours of approved post-secondary coursework; the page states plainly that meeting Pre-Social Work requirements does not guarantee BSW admission. Applications are assessed on human service experience (paid and unpaid), educational and academic background, and a personal statement addressing critical thinking, self-awareness, ethics and values; the annual deadline is January 15, with decisions communicated in early March. The BSW page does not state its own English-proficiency scores; per the university's general undergraduate requirement, international applicants must show IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 83, PTE Academic 59, CAEL 60, or Duolingo 120 unless exempt.
