Program details
Overview
This is the University of Regina's Master of Indigenous Social Work, delivered through First Nations University of Canada in person on the Saskatoon campus over one year of full-time study, with accelerated completion possible. The program trains clinical practitioners with an emphasis on working with First Nation individuals, families, groups, and communities, grounding practice in traditional Indigenous cultural methods, therapy, and healing approaches, including work related to residential school abuse and intergenerational trauma. Coursework is taught by faculty and Elders and is grounded in Indigenous knowledge, and includes a dedicated cultural camp course involving a week-long experiential immersion led by Elders. Clinical training takes the form of a supervised internship with an agency placement, supported by community service learning and research components. The program is accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education and is described on its official page as the only program of its kind in Saskatchewan. It suits social workers who already hold a social work degree and want advanced clinical training focused on Indigenous healing practices, culturally grounded therapy, and community-based practice with First Nation clients.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a completed Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work degree, as stated on the program's own page. The graduate calendar's Social Work entry adds that application is made online through the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, with a March 15 deadline in alternating years (2022, 2024, 2026, and so on). Neither the program page nor the graduate calendar publishes a minimum admission GPA or average, a required number of years of professional social-work experience, reference-letter requirements, or English-language test scores for this program; international applicants would instead be assessed against the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research's general English proficiency policy, which accepts tests such as TOEFL and IELTS but sets its minimum scores outside this program's own published pages.
