Overview
The Master of Social Work at the University of Regina is the only accredited program of its kind in Saskatchewan, recognized by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. Students begin with coursework grounded in principles of Indigenization, sustainability, and social justice, covering social research methods, direct practice, and social policy and administration, with attention to areas such as mental health, addiction, end-of-life care, and Indigenous issues. After the coursework phase, students choose between two paths to complete the degree: a thesis option involving original research and an oral defence, or a field education option built around supervised practicum placements in community or policy settings. Most full-time students finish within about two years, though the university allows longer timelines for students working through either completion path. The program is delivered on the Regina campus, with students able to draw on faculty mentorship and the university's Social Work Research Centre. It is intended for holders of a Bachelor of Social Work who want to deepen their theoretical and practice knowledge in human service delivery. Graduates go on to work in counselling, program evaluation, social policy, and administration, or in direct service with diverse populations.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Master of Social Work requires applicants to already hold a Bachelor of Social Work degree; the page states this as an explicit prerequisite and does not describe alternate pathways for applicants without a BSW. No minimum grade average is published on the program page itself; per the University of Regina's general graduate eligibility requirements, the baseline expectation across most master's programs is a graduating average of at least 70 per cent from a four-year baccalaureate degree. The program page does not state its own English-proficiency scores, work-experience, letter-of-intent, interview, or reference requirements; international applicants must otherwise submit proof of English proficiency through a recognized test unless exempt via prior Canadian post-secondary study. Full-time students complete the thesis route in about two years, with up to five years allowed for the thesis and six for the field-education route.
