Overview
The Master of Science in Biological Psychiatry is a thesis-based program training students to understand the biological basis of human brain health and psychiatric disease. Coursework and research span molecular to systems-level approaches to psychiatric and neurological disorders, including schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease, and cover neurotrophic factors, neurochemical markers, psychiatric drug effects, neurotransmitter mechanisms, and cerebrovascular function, using techniques such as quantitative electroencephalography, multi-electrode arrays, genetic sequencing, molecular assays, and human stem cell models. Students engage in critical appraisal, knowledge generation, research synthesis, and knowledge transfer under the guidance of a College of Medicine faculty supervisor, who must be secured before an application is processed. Instruction combines on-campus and online delivery. Graduates gain deep theoretical and practical knowledge of their thesis research tools, demonstrate a competent understanding of their research field, and are prepared for careers across academia, government, and industry.

Admission Requirements: A four-year honours degree, or equivalent, from a recognized college or university in an academic discipline relevant to the proposed field of study is required, with a cumulative weighted average of at least 70% (USask grade system equivalent) in the last two years of study (i.e. 60 credit units). Applicants must secure a College of Medicine faculty supervisor before their application can be processed. Proof of English proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English.
