Program details

Overview

This certificate offers an introduction, hands-on in nature, to digital mapping and GIS, across three courses covering applications such as GIS for business, conservation, and forensic use, totaling 10 to 14 credits. An optional capstone project lets students build a professional GIS portfolio suited to their own interests, and it can be folded into several existing degree programs.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed one of GEOG 355/PLAN 355, GEOG 357/BIO 357, GEOG 358 or GEOG 359, or hold a three- or four-year degree, a two-year diploma, or an associate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution. No standardized English-language proficiency test or score is stated for this certificate on either the programme page or its Calendar entry. Admission runs continuously, with applicants placed into the next intake with available space and admitted in order of application date once they meet the entrance criteria. At least 25 percent of the credits counted toward the certificate must be completed at UFV itself. The programme is open to international applicants, who apply through UFV's separate international admissions process.

Application Details

Start Date: September and January
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
