Program details

Overview

Over ten months, this certificate covers preparing drawings used for construction and for obtaining building permits, covering both residential and commercial buildings. Students apply drafting and design techniques, work with construction standards and building codes, and learn field surveying methods for understanding how a building sits on its site, alongside using AutoCAD to produce accurate building plans. The program is geared toward entry-level drafting roles in settings that include manufacturing, facility management, private design firms, municipal services, and public agencies, along with architectural, civil, or structural engineering offices, and also serves as preparation for further study in architecture.

Admission Requirements: Entry is via B.C. secondary school graduation or an equivalent, or mature-student status (19 or older). Mathematics is met by a C+ or better in Foundations of Mathematics 11, Principles of Mathematics 11, Pre-calculus 11 or MATH 085, or by passing UFV's trades math entrance exam; applicants three or more years out of school are advised to sit a math assessment. English (UFV's Entry level) is met by a C or better in English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12, English 12, English Literature 12, AP English or IB English A, or by a UFV Accuplacer Reading score of 80 with an Accuplacer WritePlacer score of 6 (of 8), a UFV Composition Placement Test score of 41 or higher, or a TOEFL iBT score of 80 with no section below 19. Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
