Program details

Overview

This interdisciplinary certificate runs 17 to 19 credits, focusing on the early modern era from roughly 1350 to 1789 and the emergence of the modern world. Four courses are drawn from disciplines such as theatre, political science, philosophy, history, and art history. It can be completed alongside another program or through direct admission for those meeting the course prerequisites, and suits those teaching in a related discipline, planning graduate study in a related field, or working on written and visual communication.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Entry requires either B.C. secondary school graduation or an equivalent, or being 19 years of age or older before the first day of classes. English proficiency is set at UFV's Entry level, met by IELTS Academic 6.0 (no band under 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80 (no section under 19), or PTE Academic 56 with 52 in writing. Applicants must also meet the individual course prerequisites for whichever elective courses they choose within the certificate. The certificate can be taken as a standalone credential or combined alongside another UFV programme, and direct admission is available without first being enrolled elsewhere. A minimum completion GPA of 2.33 across the certificate's own courses is required to graduate, though this is a completion rather than an admission threshold.

Application Details

Start Date: September and January
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
