This 30-credit certificate introduces historical methodology and covers diverse geographic and temporal areas, offered full-time or part-time at the Montreal campus with fall and winter admission. Students take one mandatory course on historical methods and working tools, two introductory courses chosen from options spanning Antiquity, the Middle Ages, modern and contemporary Europe, the United States, Canada, Latin America, Asia, the Near East, and Africa, two further courses from the HIS4000 series, and five electives from HIM, HIS2000, or HIS4000 courses. The programme develops analytical and communication skills, general historical culture or knowledge of specific periods, and a critical perspective on social change. Combined with other certificates through a cumulative programme, it can lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree, or serve as a stand-alone introduction to the discipline for students moving between fields.
