The Doctor of Philosophy in Art History is offered by the Graduate Department of Art History and prepares students for college and university teaching, museum curatorship, and other research positions, with specializations spanning Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern, and Modern and Contemporary art. Applicants may enter via an appropriate master's degree or through direct entry from a bachelor's degree. The standard entry route runs four years full-time and is delivered in person. Coursework totals 3.0 full-course equivalents, including a required departmental methodology course taken in the first year, together with reading knowledge of two foreign languages relevant to the student's research; progress is reviewed annually to confirm students maintain full-time status and satisfactory academic standing. After passing a comprehensive examination and submitting a thesis proposal, candidates proceed to independent research culminating in a defended dissertation.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants entering from a master's degree require a minimum A-minus average in their master's program. Reading knowledge of two foreign languages relevant to the student's research is required; students unable to meet language requirements for particular courses may be refused enrolment in those courses. No standardized tests are required or recommended for admission.
