York University's PhD in Art History & Visual Culture spans four fields of study: Canadian and Aboriginal Art, Curatorial and Museological Studies, Architectural Studies, and Modern and Contemporary Art. Students may incorporate research on non-Western topics, minority cultural practices, and interdisciplinary issues and approaches. The program prepares candidates for careers in art history and academia, as well as in publishing, curatorial practice, museology and arts administration. It is offered full-time or part-time, with Fall entry only. The four fields give students the flexibility to concentrate their doctoral research within a specific area of art history and visual culture. Admission requires a minimum A- overall average, along with three letters of recommendation, a resume or CV, a statement of interest and a written work sample.
