Overview

The Doctorat en histoire de l'art is a 90-credit research doctorate at Universite de Montreal, completed full-time or part-time on the Montreal campus and offered in French, English, or a combination of both languages. Students conduct original, supervised research in art history leading to a doctoral thesis defended before a jury, and may instead pursue a research-creation option that combines a portfolio of creative work with a written component. Admission is centred on the candidate's proposed research project, which must be approved in advance by a prospective thesis director from the faculty and reflects the candidate's chosen field within art history. Graduates are prepared for research careers, postsecondary teaching, and work in museums, galleries and other cultural institutions. New students are admitted in the fall and winter terms.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants need a master's degree or equivalent, with the specific prior credential depending on the country or province of study. A faculty member must agree to direct the candidate's thesis or research project before an application can be submitted, and a letter of acceptance from that supervisor is required. The application file must include a research project summary of 750 to 1,000 words approved by the prospective thesis director, a letter of intent or motivation describing the candidate's career trajectory and field of interest, a curriculum vitae detailing experience, achievements and publications, and two letters of recommendation. Candidates applying to the research-creation option must also submit a portfolio of creative work and a written sample of at least 20 pages.
