Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Social Justice Education, offered through OISE's Department of Social Justice Education, is a multi- and interdisciplinary program providing critical understanding of the social, historical, cultural, political, economic, and ethical contexts of education. Areas of study include anti-racism and critical race theory, Indigenous studies, aesthetics and media, feminist and gender studies, class and poverty studies, francophone studies, post-colonial and diaspora studies, and queer and disability studies. Coursework totals at least 3.0 full-course equivalents, with at least 2.0 in Social Justice Education courses. Students complete a comprehensive requirement by the end of Year 3, choosing among a major paper, a substantive course outline, or a draft scholarly article, then write and defend an original doctoral thesis at a Final Oral Examination. The program is delivered in person, with the possibility of completing some requirements through a hybrid delivery mode, and normally takes four years of full-time study, or six years under the flexible-time option.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate intellectual interests and concerns relevant to the humanities or social sciences and to social justice in education. For the PhD, a minimum average of B+ or better in master's-level courses is required.
