The Anthropology: General program at the University of Toronto St. George campus surveys the discipline's three core areas: archaeology, which studies past societies through their material remains; evolutionary anthropology, covering human biological diversity and the relationship between humans and non-human primates; and the study of society, culture and language, which examines how people organize social life, meaning, ritual, and identity across cultures. Rather than concentrating in a single area, the General specialization lets students draw courses from across the three fields alongside a shared first- and second-year foundation. The program is interdisciplinary, spanning the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. It is offered as a Major or Minor within the Faculty of Arts & Science, leading to the Honours Bachelor of Arts. Training in anthropology develops critical thinking and engagement with diverse perspectives and world views, useful for careers spanning business, public service, and non-profit sectors with an international or human-diversity focus.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario applicants apply through OUAC 101 for the Honours Bachelor of Arts and need the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six subjects at the 4U/M level, including English; ENG4U / EAE4U; the co-op component of Grade 12 courses will not be used for admission purposes. International applicants apply through the same OUAC system and are assessed on their own senior secondary credential. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an accepted English proficiency test unless exempt — IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT overall 4.5 with 4.5 in Writing and 4.0 in Speaking for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 — and all applicants complete a senior-level English course equivalent to ENG4U. The program page states no separate minimum average; admission to the Faculty of Arts & Science is competitive rather than threshold-based.
