The MA in Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary graduate program at Queen's University drawing on the humanities, social sciences, and the arts. Students are admitted into a 1-year MA and may apply in January of their first year to continue into a second year. Research can take the form of a traditional thesis, Research Creation, Community-based Research, or a portfolio combining varied approaches and voices. Applicants come from a wide range of undergraduate disciplines, and the program considers diverse measures of experience, accomplishment, and knowledge beyond academic grades alone. All students receive funding through teaching or research placements, fellowships, awards, or paid professional development to cover tuition and offset living costs. Faculty and students engage in antiracist and decolonial scholarship and social-justice-oriented research, and graduates go on to work as academics, artists, journalists, curators, and social advocates.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the MA program generally expects an academic average of at least B+ in the final two years of the bachelor's degree; a wide range of undergraduate backgrounds is considered, including the humanities, social sciences, arts, and sciences. No supervisor is required to apply to the MA program. Applications are processed through the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs and must include an online Statement of Interest of no more than 4000 characters, a sample of academic writing of approximately 10 pages, and optionally a curriculum vitae. The annual application window opens in September, with a February 1 deadline; offers of acceptance are generally sent out in early March, and a second round may be adjudicated after March 1 depending on capacity.
