The Mechanical Engineering program covers clean energy systems and renewable technologies, automotive, aerospace, marine, and robotic systems, and the manufacturing processes used to produce advanced materials and micro-devices. Six specialization pathways are offered: advanced materials, biomedical engineering, computer-aided engineering and advanced manufacturing, energy systems, mechatronics, and thermo-fluids and aerodynamics. Learning takes place through design studios, hands-on labs and tutorials where students test materials and model systems, and team-based projects that mirror consulting and industry work; students declare their area of engineering study after one year of full-time study. The program includes UVic's co-operative education option, in which students complete paid, career-related work terms that count toward the degree; on average 70 percent of UVic co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand. Graduates pursue roles such as aerospace engineer, automotive engineer, energy systems engineer, manufacturing engineer, product design engineer, and robotics engineer. The program leads to a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree completed over four years of full-time study, offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Victoria.
