Program details

Overview

This thesis-based MASc in Mechanical Engineering runs about two years, combining independent research with coursework and finishing in a written thesis presenting original findings. Faculty strengths cover energy systems and hydrogen technology, advanced and additive manufacturing, robotics and control, biomedical engineering, and marine renewable energy, so incoming students can shape a research focus around several active labs. Applicants must line up a faculty supervisor before applying and submit reference reports, a resume, and a letter of intent ahead of one of three annual intake deadlines. An optional co-op term is available, and the degree suits students aiming at either industry research roles or further doctoral study. The three annual intakes carry deadlines of October 1 for January entry, February 1 for May entry, and June 1 for September entry.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The program page lists application components rather than a program-specific GPA or English-language threshold, so UVic's general graduate minimums apply: an acceptable bachelor's degree (or, for a thesis-based master's, standing consistent with the Faculty of Graduate Studies' published course requirements for the field), and English proficiency of IELTS overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0 or TOEFL iBT overall 90 with no section below 20. On top of these, applicants must submit two assessment reports from academic or professional references familiar with their work, a current resume, a one-page letter of intent, and post-secondary transcripts. The program runs three intakes a year: January entry closes October 1, May entry closes February 1, and September entry closes June 1. International applicants are told to prepare their paperwork early because processing can be lengthy.

Application Details

Start Date: January, May and September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, which opens for 2027-entry applications on 1 October 2026: most degree programmes see September 2027 entry close 31 January 2027, January 2027 entry close 30 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry close 31 March 2027, though Teacher Education post-degree programmes close 2 January 2027, Indigenous Education post-degree admits on an ongoing basis, and Engineering's Summer entry (high-school graduates only) closes 31 December 2026. International applicants use the same portal and face identical dates, since UVic publishes no separate international deadline. UVic treats these as fixed annual dates rather than rolling admission, though it warns any programme can close early without notice. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
