Program details

Overview

The Mechanical Engineering MEng is a project-based master's rather than a thesis degree, completed over two years of full-time, on-campus study alongside a graduate seminar. It draws on the same broad faculty expertise as the department's research programs, spanning renewable energy, robotics and automation, additive manufacturing, biomedical engineering, and marine and offshore systems. Applicants need a faculty supervisor secured before applying, plus reference reports, a resume, and a one-page letter of intent, with three intake windows offered across the year. The project focus makes it a practical option for engineers aiming to deepen technical skills without committing to a full research thesis, and an optional co-op term is available. The same three intake windows apply as the MASc: October 1 for January entry, February 1 for May entry, and June 1 for September entry.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The program page lists application components rather than a program-specific GPA or English-language threshold, so UVic's general graduate minimums apply: an acceptable bachelor's degree (or equivalent), and English proficiency of IELTS overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0 or TOEFL iBT overall 90 with no section below 20. On top of these, applicants must submit two assessment reports from academic or professional references, a current resume, a one-page letter of intent, and post-secondary transcripts. The program runs three intakes a year: January entry closes October 1, May entry closes February 1, and September entry closes June 1. The page points to the graduate calendar's minimum course requirements for the field for anything not covered here.

Application Details

Start Date: January, May and September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, which opens for 2027-entry applications on 1 October 2026: most degree programmes see September 2027 entry close 31 January 2027, January 2027 entry close 30 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry close 31 March 2027, though Teacher Education post-degree programmes close 2 January 2027, Indigenous Education post-degree admits on an ongoing basis, and Engineering's Summer entry (high-school graduates only) closes 31 December 2026. International applicants use the same portal and face identical dates, since UVic publishes no separate international deadline. UVic treats these as fixed annual dates rather than rolling admission, though it warns any programme can close early without notice. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
