Program details

Overview

The Molecular Life Sciences program covers biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, bioinformatics, and molecular biology, with study of genomics, cancer, infectious disease, and microbiota health. Students choose an optional specialization in biochemistry, focused on how molecules shape health, disease, cells, and living systems, or microbiology, focused on bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. Students can volunteer in a faculty lab and contribute to active research, and honours students complete original research and defend an honours thesis under faculty supervision. Sample courses include Biochemistry of Signal Transduction, Epigenetic Regulation of Chromatin, and Applied Research Laboratory Techniques. The program includes UVic's co-operative education option, in which students complete paid, career-related work terms that count toward the degree; on average 70 percent of UVic co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand. Graduates pursue roles such as health-care professional, biotechnologist, pharmacologist, and industrial chemist. The program leads to a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree completed over four years of full-time study, offered by the School of Molecular Life Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Victoria.
