UVic describes its Master of Engineering in Building Envelopes and Structures, known as BEST, as the first program of its kind in North America, pairing current research with direct industry application. Students complete coursework plus a graduate project on building envelopes, structures or both; this is a project-based degree with no thesis option, and an eight-month co-op placement can be added. Study is full-time and on-campus over about a year. The technical focus is on designing advanced building envelopes for energy efficiency and climate resilience, applying structural engineering principles to optimise the use of steel, timber and concrete, and analysing how building systems perform under environmental loads. Graduates are prepared to lead projects in sustainable construction and climate change mitigation and to work with industry and communities on those solutions.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission follows the University of Victoria's general Master's requirements: completion of a four-year bachelor's degree (or equivalent) recognized by UVic with a minimum “B” average over the final two years, plus program-specific criteria. The Department of Civil Engineering asks that applicants hold a bachelor's degree in civil or mechanical engineering, or a related engineering or science field such as architecture, aerospace, applied mechanics, environmental or physics; those from other disciplines, such as city planning or forestry/timber engineering, may qualify with suitable work experience and technical or mathematical skills. UVic's general graduate English-language-proficiency requirement applies to applicants whose first language is not English (IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90, no section below 20, among other accepted tests). The application must include two assessment reports from professional or academic contacts, a current curriculum vitae, post-secondary transcripts, and a one-page letter of intent describing interest in the program and related academic or professional background.
