Overview
This MASc covers civil engineering specializations including water and wastewater treatment, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, air quality, sustainable-cities planning and building energy systems, with some faculty focused on emergency water and sanitation technology or on integrating variable renewable energy into the electrical grid. Admission requires a supervisor's letter of interest secured before applying, a one-page letter of intent, two assessment letters, a résumé and transcripts. The degree is completed full-time and on-campus over two years, culminating in a thesis or project defended in an oral exam, with an optional co-op stream and a fast-track path to the PhD for strong students. Admission Requirements: Admission follows UVic's general Master's requirements: a four-year bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with a minimum “B” average over the last two years, plus program-specific criteria. The Department of Civil Engineering does not publish its own minimum grade average on the program page; applicants must secure a faculty supervisor before applying, and a letter of interest from that supervisor is mandatory — an application is not considered without it. Applicants also submit a one-page letter of intent explaining career goals and research interest, two assessment letters from professional or academic contacts, a current résumé and post-secondary transcripts. English-language proficiency follows UVic's general graduate standard for applicants whose first language is not English (IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90, no section below 20, among other accepted tests).
