Built for applicants who hold a four-year degree outside social work but bring at least two years of human-services experience, this foundation-level MSW runs as a full-time, on-campus cohort admitted only in odd-numbered years. Core courses cover critical social work practice grounded in decolonization, Indigenous approaches, anti-racist, feminist, and queer frameworks, with a practicum available as an optional addition within a two-year (up to five-year) completion window. Applicants submit a statement of intent, an experience summary form, an updated CV, and two references, either both academic or one academic and one employer-based, along with post-secondary transcripts; September-entry applications are due November 30. Practicums, internships, and co-ops already completed do not count toward the required human-services experience hours. The full-time, on-campus cohort format means students progress together through a shared, sequential course schedule rather than assembling an individualized part-time plan.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The School of Social Work's Foundation MSW requires a four-year undergraduate degree plus at least two years full-time, or roughly 3,000 hours, of paid or volunteer human services experience (practicums, internships and co-op do not count), together with a statement of intent, an experience summary, an updated CV, two references and transcripts. Beyond that, the Faculty of Graduate Studies' general master's requirements apply: completion of a four-year bachelor's degree, or equivalent, and the equivalent of a minimum ‘B’ average over the last two years of that degree. English proficiency follows UVic's institution-wide scale: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band under 6.0, or TOEFL iBT overall 4.5 with no section under 4.0 for tests taken after 21 January 2026 (90 overall/20 per section on tests taken before that date); PTE Academic, CAEL, Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency and the Michigan English Test are also accepted, individual departments may set higher minimums, and scores cannot be more than two years old.
