Program details

Overview

This certificate combines reading, writing and oral practice with the culture and literature of a chosen language specialisation, offered in French, Spanish, Japanese or Mandarin Chinese. It is framed around building an advantage in career and business settings along with a stronger understanding of how to communicate with people from that language background.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: General admission requirements apply, per VIU's Admission Requirements for Academic Programs. New students are placed into language courses according to their ability, experience and previous education, and native speakers of a language may not earn a certificate in that language, since they cannot take its lower-level courses for credit; individual courses may carry their own prerequisites beyond the certificate's admission requirements. VIU does not publish a programme-specific English-language test table on this page; the general Degree English Requirement applies. Once enrolled, students must maintain a minimum 'C+' average in required first- and second-year courses to receive the certificate. The certificate has a September intake, with a $46.98 application fee and no late applications accepted.
