Overview
The Master of Arts (MA) in Music at Western University is offered by the Don Wright Faculty of Music as a one-year, 12-month, three-term degree, the first program of its kind in Canada. Students choose a specialization in either Music Theory or Musicology and complete high-quality graduate-level coursework in a shortened, intensive timeframe compared to a standard two-year MA. The program combines course-based and project-based learning to deliver a compact yet thorough graduate experience within the discipline. Detailed admission requirements differ between the Music Theory and Musicology specializations and are published on their respective program pages. The program follows Western's general graduate English proficiency standard for applicants whose first language is not English, and runs full-time.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Western's MA programs in the Don Wright Faculty of Music (Musicology or Music Theory) normally require a Bachelor of Music with a specialization in Musicology, a Bachelor of Arts with Honours Music, or an equivalent undergraduate music degree. The minimum admission average is 70% in the last two years of full-time study, though meeting this minimum does not guarantee admission; competitive applicants typically present 80% or higher in their proposed area of concentration. Applicants submit a statement of interest, two recent essays of 3,000 to 5,000 words, transcripts from every postsecondary institution attended, and two academic references. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of proficiency taken within the past two years: a TOEFL iBT of at least 86 (or 4.5 on the version used from January 21, 2026) with no section below the stated minimum, an IELTS Academic overall score of at least 6.5, or a Duolingo English Test score of at least 115.
