The Master of Arts (MA) in Community Music is the first program of its kind in Canada, balancing theory and practice to develop leadership skills for community leaders engaged in making music with diverse populations in schools, places of worship, private studios, seniors' homes, community centres, and other venues. Coursework covers community music practices and leadership, music and meaning in community contexts, creativity and interdisciplinary arts, and qualitative research methods, and culminates in a public community capstone with a research project presentation. Full-time study takes one year across three consecutive terms; a part-time option runs eighteen months over six terms. Classes are delivered in person on the Waterloo campus, with intake each September. Admission requires a four-year honours undergraduate degree with a minimum B standing (73 to 76 per cent) over the final two years of study, plus a foundation of musical training and experience.
