York University's Biology PhD is a research-based doctoral program spanning three specialization streams: animal physiology, ecology and evolution, and molecular and cellular biology. Students work with faculty active in molecular structure and interactions, genomics and proteomics, physiology, conservation biology, community and ecosystem studies, and neurobiology, using facilities that include molecular core labs and mass spectrometry. The program is structured around Research Progress Evaluations, a preliminary examination, and a dissertation oral examination rather than coursework alone, culminating in original research contributing new knowledge to the field. It draws on a mix of model and non-model study systems, including human subjects, and encourages interaction across biological subdisciplines. The degree is offered full-time, with part-time study options available through direct contact with the program. Admission is for Fall entry only. The program suits students pursuing an academic research career in the biological sciences who want to work alongside faculty recognized with Steacie Fellowships, Young Investigator awards, York Research Chairs, and Canada Research Chairs.
