This program fosters intensive examination of historical questions through approaches including gender, transnational and comparative, economic, political, cultural and social history. It offers particular strengths in Canadian, British, Caribbean, European, Latin American, U.S. and East Asian history, alongside African and Greco-Roman studies. Two degrees are available: an MA, completed over three terms of full-time study, and a PhD, which follows a longer research-intensive path toward a dissertation. The program is based in York University's Department of History within the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and MA students combine coursework with a major research paper or thesis under the supervision of faculty working across these regional and thematic fields, developing original research grounded in primary-source analysis and preparing graduates for doctoral study or research-related careers.
