Overview
This two-year biophysics programme builds understanding of the operating principles and pathology of living systems alongside the capabilities and limits of modern biophysical research methods, through compulsory subjects in biophotonics, biophysical nanotechnology, the use of lasers in biology and medicine, and data analysis, plus three research projects and a thesis. Elective subjects range across synthetic and systems biology, population models, mathematical physiology, membrane biology and bioethics, and neuron and cell biophysics, extending to the structural analysis of biological macromolecules by X-ray methods. Teaching combines lectures, laboratory and practical work, seminars, consultations and self-study, aiming to produce graduates able to plan scientific investigation and explain biophysical concepts to specialist and non-specialist audiences, with paths into medical institutions, education and public or private agencies, research and development work, or high-technology industry, or further doctoral study.
