The programme examines how new technologies, from social media platforms and contact-tracing apps to robotics and sustainable energy sources, create both opportunities and risks for societies and economies, and how citizens, governments, businesses and universities each face challenges in making use of these innovations given their often unintended consequences. Scientific and technological development is approached from a multidisciplinary angle, on the premise that innovation cannot be understood through economics or technical analysis alone. Teaching explores the connected worlds of scientists, engineers, politicians and citizens, weighing the values, economics, history and political forces behind modern innovation, with a global and environmentally conscious framing intended to build ethical awareness and a sense of public responsibility.
