BA/BS in Applied Mathematics

The major teaches how to turn everyday problems into mathematical models that can be used to solve them and improve real situations, with applications spanning debit card encryption, transport planning, spaceship design, insurance pricing, wind farm design and traffic light timing. Teaching addresses practical problems from industry and government that may not initially appear mathematical in nature, balancing expert knowledge with skills development and real-world challenges. The major makes up about half of the three-year degree, combining essential courses and electives covering theory, mathematical modelling and professional skills with further coursework that prepares students for an engineering role, including independent and group work on real-world assignments.
