The chemistry master's degree (MS) is administered by the chemistry and biochemistry department, which sets its own prerequisites alongside the general admission rules of Graduate Education. Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in chemistry or biochemistry, or a closely related science, and have taken a year of calculus and a year of physics at college level.
Successful applicants typically have a GPA at or above 3.0 across their last 60 undergraduate hours, 2.75 in chemistry courses, and C grades or higher in general, organic and analytical chemistry with labs. Up to six credits can transfer from an accredited graduate program.
The degree requires at least 31 graduate credits across chemistry and related subjects. Students are expected to do research full time over the summer. Everyone who is matriculated stays registered each term, fall and spring plus summer, until completing the degree, unless a leave of absence applies. Students choose a research mentor and begin research in their first semester.
