BA/BS in Chemistry

Chemistry is a Bachelor of Science that studies nature at the level of molecules. Instruction combines classroom teaching, laboratory work, and research experiences. The curriculum builds a base in carbon-based compounds, then advances into physical properties of matter, measurement and detection, and inorganic compounds. Hands-on experiments and research build lab competence and sharper reasoning. The department also covers biology and environmental science, and a minor in chemistry is open to students in other majors. The program is delivered on the Christopher Newport University campus in Newport News, Virginia, where students work closely with faculty. The full course list is in the undergraduate catalog, and the department can answer questions. Students are encouraged to meet an advisor early to plan their courses across semesters.
