The communication master's degree has a research focus that prepares students for further graduate study or for work across communication professions. Graduates have gone on to doctoral programs, college teaching and a range of careers needing advanced communication skills.
Degree work requires a minimum of thirty credit hours. Required courses include foundations in communication, quantitative and qualitative research methods, a colloquium, and either thesis research or directed readings, so students choose a thesis or non-thesis route. Electives come from communication graduate courses and, optionally, related disciplines, an internship or independent study. Areas such as sport communication and media and technology are listed.
Students can take part in the Social Media Listening Center, join the research hub run by the department, and study abroad. Applicants need a bachelor's degree, and GRE scores are optional.
