Journalism at Los Angeles Harbor College combines classroom study with hands-on newsroom practice. Students may work on the staff of the Harbor Tides student newspaper, its social media channels and its news website while building a portfolio of published work.
The program offers an associate of arts transfer degree aimed at the California State University system, together with short skills certificates covering craft basics, layout and design, methodology in journalism and public relations, and the writing and creation of publications.
Courses prepare students for editorial and photojournalism positions at newspapers, magazines and trade journals, for freelance writing, and for writing in television and radio news. Learners practice desktop publishing, news writing and editing in Associated Press style, and online and broadcast reporting. Non-majors also benefit, since many courses sharpen writing technique, note-taking and leadership.
