AA/AS in Communication and Media Studies

The Communication Studies department at Los Angeles Harbor College helps students become stronger speakers and writers across everyday, workplace, cultural and civic settings. Coursework spans public speaking, argumentation and debate, interpersonal and intercultural communication, small group work and new media. Students can earn an associate degree in this subject, and a transfer version is also offered. Several courses meet the speaking requirement that transferring students face and count toward general education patterns used by California State University and University of California campuses. Outcomes emphasize clear writing for different audiences, research and source evaluation, and building reasoned arguments in a consistent academic style. The department stresses equity, diversity and student success, and a program mapper is available to plan the sequence of courses.
