Overview

The environmental studies department prepares students with the understanding and abilities to tackle environmental problems and build a sustainable future, from local to worldwide scales. It relies on problem-centered study that crosses disciplines and schools. Students may pursue interests in environmental values, policy and law, urban environmental challenges, climate change, energy systems, environmental justice, and humanity's complicated relationship with both tamed and untamed nature. Undergraduates in the College of Arts and Science declare the major or minor by completing a form on the department website after reviewing the requirements. The department's advising office answers questions about either option.
